Our father’s coining of the phrase "Real republican Living" dates as far back as my brother and I can remember. Now at the age of 88, he can't quite remember the origins of his expression or when he first started using it. What we do know is that this phrase became a hallmark of moments filled with celebration and camaraderie, and that's precisely why we cherish it so dearly.
Throughout our lives, there were numerous occasions when we would relax with our father, after a day of golfing, fishing, or vacationing. Sipping on a cocktail, watching the sunset, and reflecting on the day, my father would raise his glass and declare, "Boys, this is Real republican Living."
This tradition has endured, passed down through our families and embraced by the younger generations. Even when it does not seem apparent, we strive to acknowledge that every day spent with loved ones is extraordinary and should be treasured and celebrated.
It is crucial to clarify that "Real republican Living" is not a political statement, as emphasized by the small 'r' in the word "republican." Instead, it serves as a salute to the American spirit – a celebration of ambition, resilience, optimism, patriotism, authenticity, and gratitude, as well as the success born from these spirited values.
Despite being lightheartedly labeled as a "Massachusetts Liberal" by some of his staunch Republican friends, likely attributable to his 31 years of living in Boston, our father has always maintained a moderate stance in his political views, with a slight lean towards the Democratic party. He always possessed a substantial grasp of both sides of a political argument, enabling him to playfully take opposing stances in discussions with Republicans or Democrats, depending on his mood.
For almost 42 years, my father dedicated himself to Graybar Electric Company, starting in 1958 behind the sales counter and retiring as the District Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors in 2000. A true embodiment of a hardworking family man, he lived the American dream as a boy raised on an Iowa farm, a college graduate, and a military veteran. With 68 years of marriage, he cherished his wife and loved his family.
As far as we can discern, our father is the originator of the phrase "Real republican Living," and by trademarking it, we are pleased to have immortalized it forever as his own.
